After eating some mystery fish sticks, Leshawna achieves every little girl's dream and transforms into a mermaid!

Plot[]

The episode starts with Chef telling Harold, Leshawna, Cody, Courtney, and Owen to read page 10 in their science books, but strange things happen to the books as the kids start reading them; butterflies come out of Harold's book, Leshawna's book destroys itself, and dust comes out of Cody's book, causing him to get a pink eye. Chef tells the kids that he should be hearing learning rather than complaining. Courtney then asks Chef about how old the books are, and that her book says the Earth is flat. She then tells Chef that there's a whole chapter on mermaids in the book, much to Chef's horror. He takes the books away from the kids, throws them in the bin, throws the bin in the air, and shoots a missile at the bin, causing it to explode and destroying everything inside, including the books. Harold claims that it seemed a little 'extreme'.

As the kids (except Cody) walk away from the door, Courtney asks about why Chef has a problem with mermaids and says that they are not real. However, Leshawna, having been offended by Courtney's statement, says that mermaids are actually real, as she saw every mermaid movie and read every mermaid book, and then later shows the kids a mermaid tattoo on her arm, much to the other kids' excitement, and says that it won't rub off for 5 whole days. Courtney still doesn't believe in mermaids and asks the others if they agree with her, but Owen pushes her away and asks Leshawn to tell him more about being a mermaid queen.

Leshawna explains to the other kids that she had tried everything to become a mermaid queen, including sleeping on a water bed, eating only shrimp, and starting to kiss fish, but Owen tells her not to as he kissed a horse at his grandma's farm around 50 times and is/was still not a centaur (the horse had also kicked Owen away), and then thought that he should try kissing the other end of the horse. Leshawna sighs and thinks that she will never be a mermaid queen as somebody has to be born a mermaid, but Harold asks about "Project Bluefin", and then explains that there is a viral video that proves the existence of mermaids.

A video Harold shows the kids reveals that a long time ago, the army fed their soldiers bioengineered fish sticks, and then turned into mer-soldiers. He explained that the mer-soldiers were great in the water, but not great on the land as they couldn't walk, so the mer-soldiers were turned back to normal, and that the program was shut down, and buried by the government. Leshawna becomes shocked knowing that Chef was one of the mer-soldiers, and Chef explains inside his office that the story of him being a mer-soldier was true, but he wasn't hiding anything else from his secret army career. He then spots an alien in his safe, but successfully closes the safe doors and laughs nervously.

Leshawna becomes angry and tells Harold that he didn't talk about the video proving that Chef was a military mer-soldier, but Harold walks away, saying that he doesn't do spoilers. She looks at the video and notices that the video says that there are still 2 hidden boxes of fish sticks out there, waiting to turn someone into a mer-person, but asks about how she can track down the fish sticks, wondering that they could be anywhere. Then, Owen sniffs and smells somebody having a barbecue in France. Leshawna tells Owen to sniff out some magic fish sticks, and then says that she wishes to be the most powerful mermaid queen ever. She dreams about her as a mermaid queen being showered in jewels, and with her aquatic army, she'll turn all the taps in every house on, flood the planet, and then turn it into a water world. Leshawna tells Owen that as her trusted ally, he'll be second in command, and reap all the spoils, but he interrupts her, saying that she had him at the fish sticks.

The scene transitions to the freezer with the 2 hidden boxes of fish sticks, much to Leshawna's surprise that the hidden boxes of fish sticks were in the freezer the whole time as Owen takes the boxes out of the freezer. He gives a box to Leshawna, and then she reads the instructions telling her that it's super important to eat only half a box, or any more can result in the person turning into an aquatic creature. Owen eats everything in the box, and turns into a blowfish, much to Leshawna's shock. She then decides to eat the whole box, and then transforms into a mermaid. She then looks in the mirror and admires herself in excitement. Unfortunately, Chef notices

References[]

  • The episode's title is in reference to the 1988 film A Fish Called Wanda.
  • The episode's plot is an inverse to the plot of the fairytale The Little Mermaid. Instead of a mermaid wanting to become human, Leshawna wants to become a mermaid.
    • The idea was used in the 1989 Disney film adaptation's 2000 direct-to-video sequel Return to the Sea.
  • The general references Chuck E. Cheese when he knocks down the door to the daycare, saying "Chuck E. Seas" instead, as a play on the marine theme of the episode.

  • Leshawna being launched from the red wagon (after it hits a snail) to fly overtop Chef and Owen (standing on a crashed jeep) to escape to the ocean resembles the iconic cover scene in the 1993 film "Free Willy" where Willy jumps over Jesse (standing atop a breakwater) to escape to the ocean, except Leshawna falls short and needs to crawl the rest of the way
