An alliance is when two or more contestants join forces in order to vote someone off, or get farther in the competition with teamwork. Throughout the show, many alliances have been formed, and few have succeeded.
Alejandro made several temporary alliances with the other contestants, but is insincere in the promises that he makes, and often ends up backstabbing them for his personal gain. His approach involves pretending to help his fellow contestants with their problem, but once they have their guard down, Alejandro will then make his move and eliminate them. In Total Drama World Tour, he did this with several contestants, namely Courtney, DJ and Tyler. He uses others to eliminate certain contestants, usually with stronger contestants such as Duncan and Heather. In Total Drama All-Stars, he makes an alliance with Heather, planning on betraying her the entire time. He is briefly shown forming an alliance with Mike (under the control of Mal), but it was never mentioned after its formation. Both alliances were short-lived.
Due to Beth and Lindsay's trusting nature, they are often pulled into alliances by contestants with bad intentions who seek to use their naïvety to their advantage. In Total Drama Island, Beth and Lindsay were part of the first ever Total Drama alliance, Heather's alliance. In Total Drama Action, Justin used his good looks to pull the two into an unofficial alliance. After the two girls managed to overcome both, they formed an alliance with Harold and Owen for the purpose of eliminating Duncan. However, this failed due to Lindsay accidentally voting herself off.

Due to Cameron's size and rather shy demeanor, he is easily manipulated by antagonists, namely Jo, who used Cameron's brains to her advantage. Cameron was able to trick Jo and have her eliminated, with help from Lightning. He also creates alliances with Mike and Zoey, due to Mike being his first friend and Zoey and him wanting to vote off Scott. Cameron's alliance with Mike ended due to Mike's elimination in Grand Chef Auto. Cameron and Zoey's alliance in Eat, Puke and Be Wary was able to eliminate Scott. The two continue their alliance into The Enchanted Franken-Forest, but it ended due to Lightning winning immunity and choosing to vote off Zoey.
On two different occasions, Chef Hatchet has broken the rules of Total Drama, set by Chris, and formed alliances with DJ in Total Drama Action and Blaineley in Total Drama World Tour, due to an ulterior motive. Any alliance Chef makes with a contestant is considered an illegal alliance. In his first alliance with DJ, his motive was to split the prize money. Chef told DJ he was going to make him tougher, and make him a real man. With Blaineley, she had promised him a TV role, which interested Chef. Both alliances failed due to DJ standing up to Chef and Blaineley being voted off. During the alliance's run, Chef helped Blaineley with both challenges in Chinese Fake-Out, and she was eliminated at the end of the episode.

Chris has created short-lived alliances for the purpose of creating drama on the show. In Total Drama Action, he used Owen because everyone liked him, and asked Owen to pit everyone remaining against each other. In Total Drama World Tour, he struck a deal with Ezekiel. If Ezekiel could avoid getting captured in the challenge, and in return, capture all of the contestants one-by-one, Ezekiel would be allowed to return to the game. Ezekiel failed to do this, however, when he was captured by Owen and Noah. Chris promptly had Chef throw Ezekiel off the plane.

Courtney's first alliance was formed by her in Crouching Courtney, Hidden Owen. She points out to Beth that the girls are outnumbered by the guys (two to three) and, throughout the episode, tries to get Beth to join the alliance. Courtney says that she will do anything to get Beth in an alliance with her, so she offers Beth snacks and does tasks for her, like cooking the poisonous fish. At the end of the episode Beth finally agrees to the alliance. In 2008: A Space Owen, Courtney and Beth's alliance continues. But during the final space movie challenge, Courtney makes a questionable decision by deciding to do the challenge last. After it turns out that doing the challenge last would be worse. Courtney and Beth have a falling out for the rest of the episode and continue to argue with each other. In the end, they end the short-lived girls' alliance.
In Total Drama World Tour, Courtney develops a friendship with Gwen and forms an alliance with her. This alliance was formed in Broadway, Baby!. Despite Courtney and Gwen having a dislike for each other, they both hated Heather even more. Thus, Gwen offered to help Courtney eliminate Heather the first chance they'd get, to which Courtney eagerly agreed. The two became friends through this alliance, and often took part in teasing Heather about their ganging up on her, such as in Slap Slap Revolution. The alliance finally got its chance in The Am-AH-Zon Race, when Team Amazon lost the challenge and finally had the chance to eliminate Heather. Courtney and Gwen had to enlist the help of Sierra to secure a three-out-of-five majority vote against her, which Sierra reluctantly agreed to. Thus, Heather received the most votes and would've been eliminated, but Chris decided to suddenly declare it a fake elimination ceremony just to save Heather, who he likes. The alliance never got another chance, as it, along with Courtney and Gwen's friendship, was completely destroyed in Greece's Pieces, and afterwards they tried to form other alliances else to vote each other out.
After Gwen kisses Duncan, Courtney seeks an alliance with Heather. The alliance was formed in The EX-Files, and briefly hinted in Greece's Pieces. They constantly insulted Gwen throughout the episode in which it was formed, even making death threats against her for what she did and constantly vowing to see that their plan succeeded. They enlisted the help of Sierra, who also strongly disliked Gwen for her actions with Duncan, and saw her as an interference between her Cody. The alliance was brought into question, however, when Courtney began throwing challenges in order to send Team Amazon to the Barf Bag Ceremony, so that Gwen could be eliminated. Heather disapproved of this, saying that winning was more important than losing Gwen. She wanted to remain true to the alliance due to her rivalry with Gwen, but ultimately turned on Courtney due to her getting sick of them losing because of her. She and Gwen voted for Courtney in Picnic at Hanging Dork, while Courtney and Sierra voted for Gwen. Cody voted for Sierra, resulting in a tie, thus forcing Gwen and Courtney to participate in a tie-breaker challenge. Courtney won, and Gwen was eliminated. With its sole target gone, the alliance was dissolved.

Duncan's major alliances are formed in Total Drama Island. In Hide and Be Sneaky, he forms the first guys' alliance. After the events of Search and Do Not Destroy in which Trent is eliminated, Duncan realizes they are outnumbered six to four. After realizing that there are more girls than boys, Duncan has Owen, Geoff and DJ join a guys only alliance. He decided to have all of them vote off Bridgette since she is the most athletic of the girls left, and would have likely made it far. Since Geoff has a crush on her, Geoff didn't vote her off, resulting in the guys hanging Geoff upside down from a tree, and, eventually his elimination at the hands of Duncan, Owen, and Heather in Trial by Tri-Armed Triathlon. However Owen accidentally blabs about the alliance to Gwen, leading the girls to try and vote off a guy as well. In the end, the guys' alliance succeeds in eliminating Bridgette, but fail to accomplish anything else in Total Drama Island.
In That's Off the Chain!, the alliance is mentioned by Heather, who is displeased by the group. In addition, the guys interact and stick together throughout the episode, especially when they help Geoff get over Bridgette's elimination. The guys' alliance presumably ended in Hook, Line, and Screamer with DJ's elimination. In Wawanakwa Gone Wild!, Duncan decides he needs an alliance so he teams up with Heather. Duncan tells Heather that he'll take them into the final two. When Heather gets paralyzed, she forces Duncan to clean the bathroom for her. This alliance seemingly only lasted one episode, but it was briefly mentioned by Heather in Are We There Yeti? when Duncan was eliminated.

In I Triple Dog Dare You!, Gwen decided to ally herself with Owen and asked him to help her take down Heather once and for all promising him some of her prize money if she wins, or a box of donuts if Owen wins. Owen agreed and gave half of his freebies to Gwen. It worked, and Heather was finally eliminated from the competition after she could not complete a dare.

Heather created the first ever Total Drama alliance in Total Drama Island in The Big Sleep. Her plan was to take two other campers and try to get to the final three with them. She chose Lindsay and Beth due to Lindsay's stupidity and Beth's desperation. Heather makes it clear though that she is the leader of the group. She mostly abuses her role as such by making her alliance do stuff that involved nothing of the challenges, causing Beth to quit her alliance. Later in the show, Izzy joins for unknown reasons, although quits soon afterward without much of a complaint from Heather. After the bike race though, Lindsay lost, because of Heather and had to leave the island. Though before Lindsay leaves, it is revealed that Heather never really liked her or anyone who was in her alliance. In Total Drama Action , Heather doesn't create any real alliances. Though she notes in Riot On Set that Harold would be easy to string into an alliance, due to Harold's friendly nature towards her and their team-up in Total Drama Drama Drama Island, one never comes into fruition.
In Total Drama World Tour, Heather allied with Alejandro several times throughout the season. Heather attempted to start up another alliance in Total Drama World Tour with Sierra. Though as of The Am-AH-Zon Race, when Sierra attempted to vote for Heather, it may have ended. Heather made her first official alliance with Alejandro in Niagara Brawls, and it ended in Awwwwww, Drumheller when Heather made a secret alliance with Sierra and voted off Alejandro.
Jo never officially formed a first alliance with Brick, but mentioned that he would do whatever she wanted and referred to him as a "peon", showing that she is confident in his loyalty. After Brick started standing up to her, Jo figured that Brick was becoming too strong and formed her first official alliance with Lightning and voted Brick out in A Mine Is a Terrible Thing to Waste. After their alliance held strong until the merge, Jo noticed that Lightning was not listening to her and pondered if he had outlived his usefulness. After betraying him by pushing him towards Fang, the alliance was dissolved. Jo formed her next alliance with Cameron and was fighting for his loyalty with Lightning. After ridiculing him throughout the episode, Cameron betrayed Jo by voting her off alongside Lightning, ending their alliance.

In Beach Blanket Bogus, Justin admits in the confessional that he will try to manipulate Beth's feelings and use her to make it to the finals. This may also involve Lindsay and Owen. However, this alliance never took hold, since the girls were able to break their obsession with Justin before he wanted to use them. This alliance was never considered official, but they influenced the outcomes and eliminations of Total Drama Action.
Justin also created the second guys' alliance in Super Hero-ld to vote off Leshawna. Once he points out that the guys are outnumbered, four to three, he convinces Harold and Duncan to form an alliance with him. They are responsible for the elimination of Leshawna, and is no longer in effect since both Justin and Harold are eliminated as of 2008: A Space Owen.

The possibility of Leshawna forming an alliance is mentioned in One Flu Over the Cuckoos, when she tries to recruit two castmates. However, due to their fierce hatred for each other, both vehemently refuse. However, it is resurrected and eventually took form again in Dial M for Merger. By then, it was no longer an alliance to eliminate Heather, due to the fact that she had already been eliminated in the previous episode, but rather more as a way of guaranteeing the members further longevity in the season. However, the alliance is disbanded by the next episode when Leshawna is eliminated.
Leshawna tries to get Duncan and Harold to form an alliance with her to vote off Heather, which Harold refuses due to his conflict with Duncan. The future for this alliance quickly become grim, especially considering Leshawna's recent behavior leaving a bad impression on her team members. In the end, the alliance against Heather never takes hold, as Heather is voted off in Million Dollar Babies.
In Dial M for Merger, although Heather was already eliminated, the alliance officially forms. This time, it is formed in order to win the million dollars. Harold and Duncan decide to put aside their differences for a better chance of winning the million dollars. Duncan and Harold go behind Leshawna's back in Super Hero-ld to start the new guys' alliance with Justin, since there are more girls left than guys in the competition. Harold mentions to Duncan that the two were already in an alliance with Leshawna; however, Duncan turns on her and instructs Courtney to convince Harold to vote her off. She succeeds, and Leshawna is sent to the Lame-o-sine. Similarly, Leshawna betrays the alliance by teaming up with Lindsay and Beth to vote Duncan off, in order to mess with Courtney. However, after Harold expresses remorse for voting her off, Leshawna forgives him as she leaves the competition.

While posing as Mike, Mal makes a few alliances in Total Drama All-Stars, though almost all of them are short-lived. In You Regatta Be Kidding Me, he seemingly accepts Cameron and Zoey's proposition for an alliance, but did not participate in their allegiance. In the same episode, he meets with Alejandro in private and offers to form an alliance with him to which Alejandro accepts, though suspicious of his motive. However, Alejandro finds out that Mal is framing him in the next episode, ending their partnership. Meanwhile, Mal convinces Cameron to kiss Courtney, under the impression of pulling Scott into partnering with them. After Cameron is eliminated, Mal continue to ally with Zoey for the next few episodes, sweet-talking her as Mike into believing everything he says. He also temporarily teams up with Scott in The Bold and the Booty-ful before betraying him later that episode.

Sky and Sugar form an alliance in Sky Fall, after Sky realizes they were up against Jasmine and Shawn, whose affection towards each other spelled trouble for her. Sugar happily agrees to her proposal; however, Sky immediately lays down the condition that Sugar would not cheat during the alliance. During the challenge, the two help each other out, with Sky dragging Sugar up Mt. Chrismore, while Sugar saves Sky from a cave full of bear robots by passing gas. However, Sugar later betrays Sky by tricking her and then pushing her off a cliff, thereby breaking the alliance.
The Axis of Evil
A three-team alliance formed by the Ice Dancers, the Police Cadets and the Daters during the Superteam challenge in Ca-Noodling. The name was accidentally given by Sanders after her advice made Josee and MacArthur sabotage the other three teams. It is also sometimes known as "Team Evil". Jacques manages to find a branded catfish, which allowed all three teams to skip the next challenge and advance to the Chill Zone, tying for first. After the challenge is over, the three teams opt to retain their alliance though they secretly plan to turn against one another once they have the chance. While the Axis of Evil is still mentioned in the next few episodes, the three teams were no longer allies.
