The two teams are divided up with the guys on one team and the girls on the other, and a conflict between two of the girls forces another to choose sides. In order to win an amazing reward, the campers must eat a variety of disgusting foods. In the end, it was one side's eating habits and the other's bottomless pit that decided who won.

Plot

The episode opens as the remaining ten campers enter the main lodge expecting breakfast. Instead, they find Chris and Chef, who are giggling near the entrance. When Trent asks why there is no food, Chris assures him that there will be plenty later, and they both laugh again. When all of the campers have gathered, Chris congratulates them on making it halfway through the competition and informs them that they will all have a say in the outcome of Total Drama Island. He also says that, since the Screaming Gophers and Killer Bass teams will be merged next week, the girls will be assigned to the Gophers' cabin while the boys will be assigned to the Bass' cabin, making the day's challenge a classic "battle of the sexes." They will meet back in the main lodge for "a bite to eat" until everyone has settled in. As an added bonus, since the challenge is for a reward, no one will be eliminated.

Heather welcomes Bridgette to the girls' cabin.

Heather tries to sweet talk Bridgette about her natural-looking hair on the way back to the cabins in the hopes of forging an alliance with her. Gwen intervenes, reminding Bridgette that Heather is a troublemaker. When Bridgette gets her things packed up, she runs into Geoff, and they talk about what a great time they had while on the same team. They are about to kiss when Chris arrives and drags Bridgette away to the other cabin so they can start the challenge soon. Shortly afterwards, Geoff is accidentally hit in the head by Trent's guitar when the latter arrives in the cabin. Bridgette looks back at her former cabin as she heads towards the former Screaming Gophers' cabin, with a concerned expression on her face.

TDI Bridgette.png

Bridgette

I was a bit worried about being the only new girl on the team, but I figured it can't be that bad! I don't buy that hype about how well guys get along and how catty girls can be.

As Bridgette is about to enter the cabin, she sees Heather and Leshawna arguing, proving Bridgette's words wrong. When Leshawna demands to know who ate her pudding, Heather dismissively tells her that did it carelessly, which enrages Leshawna even more. eather fights back by saying she despises Leshawna's habit of leaving everything — including the pudding — lying around, pointing at a big bra dangling from a bunk that bugs her. When Heather sees Bridgette, who says "Oh-oh" with a blank face, standing at the door, immediately acts sweet and invites her in. She easily shows Bridgette around, but she stops short of allowing her to meet Leshawna and Gwen. Heather gives Lindsay's bunk to Bridgette and offers her a touch-up with her own makeup, prompting Leshawna to remind Bridgette that nothing in life comes for free. Despite the fact that the group is evidently dysfunctional, Lindsay states that things must be much better than at the guys' cabin.

Geoff is crowned as the leader of the boys' cabin after making a speech about his burping abilities.

Lindsay is proven to be wrong in the former Bass' cabin, where Owen and Trent effortlessly integrate with DJ, Duncan, and Geoff, with soda and music all around. Owen burps, followed by Geoff's earth-shaking burp, which blows everyone's hair back, shakes the fur off a pair of squirrels, and blasts the cabin door off the hinges. Trent declares Geoff captain after a shocked silence, and he is lifted onto a stump for a speech: a declaration that the girls are going down.

Bridgette tries to calm Heather and Leshawna down, insisting that they build bridges, not walls.

Back in the girls' cabin, tensions are rising as Heather tries to attract Bridgette by letting her borrow her make-up, despite the fact that Bridgette doesn't wear it, thus alienating everyone else, including Lindsay, who is too naive to notice Heather's cruelty. Heather and Leshawna's conflict continues because Leshawna, like Gwen, knows Heather is up to no good. Heather goes to extremes and tapes a line down the middle of the cabin, dividing herself and Lindsay from Leshawna and Gwen, leaving Bridgette to choose a side.

TDI Heather.png

Heather

Okay, I probably could’ve played that better, but Leshawna seriously creases me.

TDI Bridgette.png

Bridgette

I thought we were supposed to be a team. You know, 'united together in solidarity' or something.

Despite Bridgette's wish to avoid making walls between the girls, she eventually prefers Leshawna and Gwen's side because she is better friends with them. Heather is visibly enraged, and for the remainder of the day, she acts aggressive toward Bridgette.

When the newly formed teams return to the main lodge, they ask about breakfast once more. Chris announces that the next challenge is "The Brunch of Disgustingness," which will consist of a nine-course meal consisting of disgusting foods is served to the two teams. Each course requires all members of one team to eat the disgusting food in order to win the round. A point is awarded to the team that finishes first. The team with the most points at the end of nine rounds wins. The reward for winning is a two-day stay at a nearby five-star resort, where they will be pampered, eat gourmet meals, and receive antibiotics for any illnesses they might have contracted during their time on the show.

TDI Bridgette.png

Bridgette

I just hope we win to ease some of the tension. I mean, I'll try anything once, except meat. I can't eat meat.

Back in the dining hall, there's the usual taunting, with Leshawna telling the boys that they'll inevitably lose, and Owen declaring that if he has to, he'll eat his underwear, then asking if he will have to. The first plate is brought out, and Owen dives right into what seems to be meatballs. Chris tells him that they are meatballs, but that they are more precisely bovine testicles (censored as "meatballs" in the Cartoon Network version), making the guys lose their nerve.

TDI Heather.png

Heather

Judging by the way the guys were reacting to the — uh… — dish… I knew we could win the round.

Even some of the girls are nervous, but Lindsay continues in her search for a pedicure, while Heather and Leshawna dig in and taunt the boys. Bridgette, on the other hand, is a vegetarian and refuses to consume the dish. Heather accuses her of purposely throwing the round to spite her.

I felt so bad. I had to help her.

It was so sweet of him to help.

Bridgette eventually eats after Geoff takes pity on her and gives some soothing advice, making the girls lead 1-0.

Live grasshopper pizza with tangy jellyfish and live anchovies.

The guys are enraged that Geoff just gave the girls the win, and Chris has to intervene to remind them that the next dish is on the way. To Bridgette's surprise, the guys forgive Geoff and plan to work together in the future as a gesture of unity.

TDI Bridgette.png

Bridgette

I can't believe how quickly the guys made up! Even I like to hold a grudge for a good six minutes.

The next course is a pizza with live grasshoppers in a tangy jellyfish sauce and live anchovies, prepared by Chef. The girls refuse to eat the pizza, but Owen devours his first slice in no time. Heather refuses to consume the bowl, prompting Gwen to yell angrily at her that she is digesting a bull's most precious "cojones," and that Heather will eat. Heather asks if she can have some Parmesan on the pizza, to which Chef responds with a shake of his head.

TDI Bridgette.png

Bridgette

Okay, sure, I've eaten tuna salad sandwiches, but I never worked out my position on eating live fish, but I had to get in good with the group!

Lindsay is about to give up on that part of the challenge when Bridgette teaches her a meditation technique that helps her forget about the pizza. Trent refuses to eat it, even though the majority of the guys do.

TDI Trent.png

Trent

When I was a kid, my parents used to hold me down and force-feed me broccoli. They only did it because broccoli's — (gags) — good for you!

As a result, the other guys are pushing him down and stuffing a slice of pizza into his mouth. The guys tie it up 1-1 because Leshawna is unable to eat her slice.

TDI Trent.png

Trent

It wasn't that bad. I was playing it up for the cameras. You know, to boost ratings. I don't really mind beef testicles, or live grasshopper pizza with jellyf— Ooh… [vomits loudly]

Chef brings out the third course, spaghetti, though it's actually earthworms covered in snail slime sauce and hairballs.

TD Chef.png

Chef

I was excited about the next dish. I made it from scratch.

Geoff breaks down and runs away, but DJ tackles him to the ground and brings him back in. The guys attempt to eat their lunch by covering their eyes and breathing through their noses. Lindsay attempts Bridgette's deep meditation to forget how disgusting the food is when eating the worms, but the worms are too much for her, and she gags and loses track of where she is. The guys win two in a row, leading 2-1.

Bridgette tries to psyche the girls up for the next meal, and Gwen and Heather chime in, but Leshawna is already feeling sick. Chef claims to be excited for the next meal, since he made it from scratch. Chris introduces the next meal: French Bunion Soup with hangnail crackers.

TDI Geoff.png

Geoff

I think they just used stuff from Chef's bathroom floor.

The guys can't handle the soup, so Bridgette comes up with the genius idea of funneling it straight down the nose, bypassing the tongue and taste buds entirely; she tries it on Lindsay, and it works perfectly. The girls tie the game at 2-2.

TDI Bridgette.png

Bridgette

I think the girls really made a breakthrough as a team!

The show goes on to the next four challenges: Chef's pre-chewed gum; "shaken and not stirred" skunk juice; a sandal with a caulking happy face painted on it; and soup made from banana peels, fish heads, and soda cans. Despite this, the score remains 2-2, suggesting that none of the previous four rounds have been won.

The teams are now at the last meal: dolphin wieners — hot dogs made from dolphins. Bridgette, a surfer and vegetarian, flatly refuses to eat the hot dogs because dolphins are her friends. DJ sides with Bridgette, also refusing to eat dolphin.

TD Chef.png

Chef

I slave over a hot stove cooking dolphin. No appreciation!

Chris sees the stalemate and calls it off, sending the fight to an eat-off.

The guys win the challenge, along with the reward.

Leshawna and Owen face each other. The tie-breaker is shots of freshly mixed cockroaches, an unexpected fulfilling combination of eight cockroaches rich in vitamins for a balanced life. The cockroaches are blended on the spot, and the chunky mixture is poured into fifteen shot glasses. For their team, whoever drinks the most shots wins. Leshawna and Owen begin drinking one by one; after six glasses each, it appears that both have hit their limit, but Owen's obscene eating habits kick in, and he downs the remaining three glasses in rapid succession, defeating Leshawna 9-6, and then passes out. The guys win 3-2, and Heather confronts Leshawna angrily and chastises her for losing. With the last challenge, Leshawna made herself ill, resulting in a chain of barfing on the table, complete with an undigested cockroach. The guys start vomiting, starting with DJ and then Trent; Chef and Chris manage to keep it together, but Duncan and Geoff vomit right in front of the camera.

Later, at the Dock of Shame, the guys leave on their luxurious weekend retreat, while the girls remain divided with Leshawna and Gwen locking out Lindsay and Heather. Bridgette and Geoff are left lamenting the day that has pulled them apart.

Trivia

General

  • The meals the campers have to eat were:
    1. Beef testicle bourguignon (replaced by beef "meatballs" bourguignon in America) (Girls win).
    2. Pizza covered with live grasshoppers, jellyfish and live anchovies (Guys win).
    3. Live worms covered in slime and hairballs (Guys win).
    4. French Bunion Soup with hangnail crackers (Girls win).
    5. A ball made out of pre-chewed bubble gum.
    6. A shake made purely out of a skunk's liquefied odor.
    7. A sandal (with a smiley face made of silicone icing).
    8. A stew made from banana peels, dead fish and soda cans.
    9. Hot dogs made from dolphin meat (neither Bridgette nor DJ would eat them, and no one ends up eating this dish).
    10. Shot glasses of blended cockroaches (only Owen and Leshawna drink these, Guys won).
  • The only contestants to switch cabins were Bridgette (from the Bass' to the girls' cabin), and Owen and Trent (from the Gophers' to the boys' cabin).
  • This episode reveals for the first time that Bridgette is a vegetarian, this being odd, as she is occasionally seen eating meat prior to this episode.
  • Gwen is the only contestant not seen eating any of the disgusting food.
  • This episode features two new team symbols: a blue male symbol, and a pink girl symbol.
    • However, these are not shown during confessionals.
  • In the Netflix version, this episode is incorrectly spelled "Bunch of Disgustiness."
  • Killing and eating dolphins is federally illegal in North America.

Continuity

References

  • This is one of two episodes in the series to be referenced in the game show Jeopardy, along with "Dodgebrawl."
  • Being that this episode is a tribute to Fear Factor's unpleasant eating challenges, the first dish of the competition, the beef testicles, is a reference to the buffalo testicles the aforementioned show had as one of their challenges.

Goofs

  • In the recap, the scene where Heather's top is ripped off, Harold crashes into the rock, and Heather covers her breasts, the camera angle has been reversed to how it appeared in the episode.
  • Chris gives the campers his congratulations for making it to the half way point, but since there were twenty-two contestants at the start, the half way point would have technically been the previous episode.
  • When the campers are walking into the main lodge, Duncan and DJ are never seen walking in, but in the next shot, they're both seen sitting at the table with Bridgette and Geoff.
  • Chris said that the campers present are going to be the "jury" in the final episode, but this does not happen in the finale. Every camper returns as the peanut gallery, but nobody gets to judge anything. However, all campers aside from those still competing later are influential in deciding who they want to win, as shown in the finales of the second and the third seasons.
  • When Chris tells the campers about the merge, Owen (who was previously sitting next to Trent) seems to disappear, but is later shown walking out of the lodge with everyone else.
  • When Bridgette goes out of the Bass cabin, she is carrying her surfboard while talking to Geoff. Upon entering the Gophers cabin, it is gone.
  • When Geoff wins the burping contest and makes his speech he thanks his "big" brother for helping him to "pull back and let it rip", but on "Total Drama Island: Totally Interactive!" it says Geoff is the oldest of five brothers.
  • After Geoff makes his burp, all of the other guys' hair (or, in DJ's case, his bandana) are blown back. However, after he is placed on the tree stump to make his speech, their hair is back to normal.
  • When Heather screams because of the grasshopper on her finger, she has Lindsay's scream rather than her own.
  • While Heather is nervously holding her slice of pizza as she takes a bite, the grasshopper is seen to repeatedly scurry around in midair.
  • When Geoff slaps Owen's hand away from taking a second slice of pizza, he has his bracelet on. But when everyone is in the picture, the bracelet is on his other wrist.
  • As Chris explains the blended cockroach challenge he says it is made of an eight different cockroach blend, despite the fact that eleven cockroaches can be seen in the blender.
  • In Trent's bio, it says that his dad is an accountant, but when he is being held down, he says his dad is a lawyer. Though he may have said this to scare DJ and Geoff into letting him go.
  • When Lindsay finished her hangnail soup, Chris instantly declared the girls the winner of that round. However, none of the other girls have finished their soup.
  • After Bridgette crosses the line to Gwen and Leshawna's side, when the girls are walking away, the lines on Lindsay's skirt are vertical instead of horizontal.
  • Owen eats all of the bovine testicles right away, but later it shows him eating more.
  • This episode is titled "Brunch of Disgustingness," but on Cartoon Network the episode was titled "Brunch of Disgust" when broadcast.
  • After Owen wins the drinking tie-breaker, it is shown that the girls have two points and the guys have three, even though multiple other dishes were shown. It is possible, however, that one or more members of both teams refused to eat these dishes.
  • When Duncan and Geoff arguing after the girls win the first round, Duncan's "Are you kidding me?" line appears to be in Trent's voice.
  • When Chef gives Gwen a ball made out of pre-chewed bubble gum, Gwen has 3 hands.
