The final 8 campers go through a challenge where they are forced to survive a real horror movie. A "psycho killer" is picking them off one by one, with the exception of two experts. The winner of the challenge is the last one standing. However, the challenge takes a frightening twist when somebody encounters a real killer. In the end, another person leaves the island for fearing someone who wasn't the killer.

Plot[]

Duncan looks at dj during movie

DJ is afraid of the horror movie.

The episode begins with the remaining campers (DJ, Duncan, Geoff, Gwen, Heather, Izzy, Leshawna, and Owen) watching a scary horror movie in which a man terrorizes his victims with a chainsaw and a hook. Duncan, Gwen, and Izzy are the only ones who enjoy the movie, while DJ is mortified by the gruesome scenes. After the movie, Izzy says she loves scary movies and jumps into Owen's arms, prompting both Duncan and DJ to give Owen a thumbs up for having Izzy in his arms. Duncan then pulls out a hook, scaring an already terrified DJ even more.

Afterwards, Duncan and Gwen share their love of horror movies by referring to scenes from their favorite movie: Bloodbath 2: Summer Camp Reign of Terror. However, Heather is unimpressed by the "mindless" movie and wonders aloud what their next challenge will be, while Geoff wonders where Chris is.

Moments later, the campers see Chris and Chef, with frightened looks on their faces, get on the Boat of Losers with their luggage and hastily leave the island. Owen then finds a bag left behind, along with a newspaper containing an article about an escaped psycho killer with a chainsaw and a hook. DJ thinks it looks real, but Heather dismisses the whole thing as another stunt by Chris. Owen then points out that Chris forgot his hair gel in his hurry to leave. DJ is horrified by the situation and Duncan makes it worse for him with the hook again. DJ then gets the feeling that they are being watched, prompting Heather to remind him that they are on a reality show and that they are always being watched. Moments later, the scene cuts to Chris, who is watching the contestants through a number of monitors. Chris explains that tonight's show will focus on the campers struggling to survive the wrath of a killer with a chainsaw and a hook.

Back on the island, Gwen says they need a game plan to survive, but Heather says she's going to put on a face mask. Gwen disagrees with Heather's plan and says that the first rule of horror movies is to never go alone. Heather replies that it might be true if she were in a movie, but they are just getting punked by Chris. As Heather leaves, Izzy playfully says that she is sealing her fate and makes a throat cutting gesture to indicate what she thinks. Gwen gets the others to join her at the campfire site to discuss strategy, but Izzy grabs Owen off to the side and the two head into the woods together. Owen tells Izzy about the time he won a hot-dog-a-thon when he ate 198 hot dogs, impressing Izzy, but after the story, Owen tries to remember why they shouldn't be in the woods. Back at the campfire site, Gwen goes over the survival rules with them, such as not going out alone, not going into the woods alone, and never making out in the woods because they would die. Gwen asks where Owen and Izzy went, and Duncan replies that they broke rules one through three.

Nonamen

Owen falls off a cliff and Izzy follows.

Back in the woods, Owen realizes that the couples making out are the first to be killed, but Izzy points out that they are not making out. However, in an act of spontaneity, Owen and Izzy jump into some nearby bushes and start making out as a figure that looks like the escaped killer approaches the area. Moments later, the two run screaming from the area, with the figure running after them. After a short chase, Owen falls off the edge of a cliff, hitting a goat, a fire hydrant, a cactus, a plunger that sets off explosives, and a campfire before hitting the ground. Izzy follows, making the same sounds as she descends and lands on Owen. Moments later, the killer approaches them, and Owen pushes Izzy toward the killer to save himself. Owen flees and a few moments later reaches the tent where Chris is watching what is going on. Chris explains that the "killer" is actually Chef in disguise and that the main challenge is to "survive." Izzy laughs at this on her way to Owen, saying it was a good one. Owen laughs too and tries to make it better by joking about it, which Izzy doesn't buy. Owen realizes it's not working because she's still thinking about how he pushed her into the escaped killer with a chainsaw and a hook. Owen asks if he's getting to second base. Izzy shakes her head. "Is he getting to first base?" Izzy shakes her head. He then asks, "Is he getting up to bat?" and she punches him in the head. Chris then sends Chef out to do more terrorizing.

Heather-shaves

DJ is horrified at the sight of Heather shaving her legs.

At the campfire, as Gwen continues to go over the survival plan, showing the figures she drew on a chart, she notices that DJ and Geoff are missing, as Duncan says they went to the washroom. In the bathroom, DJ begs Geoff not to leave, no matter what, and Geoff agrees to stay. However, Geoff is lured away by the sound of an ice cream truck — courtesy of Chris — and when DJ sees Heather wearing a lime green face mask and towels, he screams and runs at the same time. After running over hills, off a cliff, through the bottom of the lake, down the Dock of Shame, and into Chris' tent, DJ is brought to his senses when Izzy slaps him in the face. Chris tells DJ the truth about the killer, pointing out that DJ escaped without even encountering Chef in disguise. But DJ protests that Heather's appearance is also scary.

Gwen enters the bathroom through the hole DJ made earlier when he ran away and asks Heather if she is okay since she heard DJ scream. Heather says she is fine and wants to take a shower without Gwen around. Gwen starts to warn Heather that she wouldn't do that if she were her, but Heather looks at her with an angry expression, so Gwen tells her to suit herself. After Gwen leaves, Heather goes to take a shower, but is startled to see the killer standing a few feet away. A short time later, in Chris' tent, Chris lectures a bug-eyed Heather that if she had followed the rules of a scary movie about not going off alone, she'd still be in the game.

At the campfire, Gwen asks where Leshawna went, and Duncan replies that she went to Chef's kitchen to get some food.

Doesn't anyone listen to me?!

Gwen crosses out Leshawna's figure on her chart. In the kitchen, Leshawna reaches for a plate of brownies when she hears her name whispered, followed by the killer's appearance. Leshawna talks tough at first, but eventually runs away and ends up in the tent with Chris and the other eliminated people. She laughs it off though, claiming she didn't see it coming. Chris points out that challenging the killer was crazy, but she gets points for bringing everyone some brownies.

Geoff and the Killer

The killer approaching Geoff from behind.

Back outside, Geoff hasn't noticed the ice cream truck he learned about earlier. When the killer taps him on the back, Geoff asks if he saw the ice cream truck. After several seconds of obliviousness, Geoff finally realizes who's behind him and screams. Moments later, Chef puts a wide-eyed Geoff in the tent with Chris and the others, where DJ chastises Geoff for leaving him earlier. However, they are interrupted by Gwen's voice coming from Chris' monitors, asking Duncan where Geoff is, to which he replies that he "probably bit it with DJ." This doesn't surprise Gwen, as she explains rule number 8: "The party guy is a prime target for the psycho killer, right after the big loveable jock."

Psh, now she tells me.

Gwen is disappointed that no one listened to her, because if they had, they would all be in the challenge. The conversation turns to Duncan's pyromania, which he uses to set Gwen's chart on fire, so she goes to get some water. Duncan makes his way down to the dock after hearing his name whispered and comes face to face with the killer. When Gwen comes back, she notices that Duncan is missing and gets so angry that she decides to put the killer aside and go get a sandwich.

PsychokillerQu'est-cequec'est

It turns out that there really is an escaped psycho killer with a chainsaw and a hook on the island.

Duncan throws a chair, a canoe, a life preserver, a surfboard, and a fish at the killer before watching the chainsaw cut into the dock in front of him. Duncan grabs the chainsaw and prepares to see who's behind the mask. Elsewhere, Gwen is eating a sandwich in the dining hall when she is approached by a shadowy figure with a chainsaw and a hook, but she is unfazed. Meanwhile, Duncan, wearing the mask, and Chef enter Chris's tent, but now that Chef is in the tent, everyone realizes that Gwen is up against a real psycho killer. As they rush to save Gwen, she treats the killer like an actor, recommending that he invest in a dental plan and toothpaste. Moments later, Chris and the others arrive and yell at Gwen that she is facing the real killer. Gwen screams and kicks the killer several times in the face. The killer, angered by this treatment, walks away, muttering that he was treated better in prison, while Duncan congratulates Gwen onr her behavior with a high five.

Hugs for DJ

Everyone hugs DJ goodbye after his elimination.

Afterwards, Chris explains that it was agreed that Gwen would receive invincibility for this challenge because she actually beat a real killer. On the other hand, DJ is unanimously chosen by Chris to be eliminated because he freaked out without meeting the killer. After a group hug, he walks to the Dock of Shame and leaves the island while the killer, watching from nearby, repeatedly whispers "Total Drama Island" before complaining about his sore nose and asking if he's bleeding.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • According to Gwen, some of the rules for surviving a horror movie are:
    1. Don't go alone.
    2. If you do go alone, never go into the woods.
    3. If you do go into the woods, never make out, or you will die in the woods.
    4. Never shower alone.
    5. The party guy is a prime target for psycho killers, right after the big, lovable jock.
  • The surfboard Duncan throws at Chef looks similar to the one Bridgette owns.
  • In this episode, it is revealed that Leshawna grew up in the housing projects.

Continuity[]

References[]

  • The title of this episode is a parody of the phrase "Hook, Line, and Sinker."
  • Most of the concept of the episode seems to be tied to Friday the 13th in its concepts and jokes:
    • The hockey mask worn by the killer (both Chef and the real one) is an obvious homage to Jason Voorhees, with details like the red markings on the sides.
    • The setting of both the movie and Total Drama Island is a summer camp.
    • Both Chef and the actual killer mimic Jason's peculiar "breathing" before attacking his victims, as well as his habit of chanting words before killing.
    • The mention of the scenes where the killer kills the couple making out is a parody of when Mrs. Voorhees kills Barry Jackson and Claudette Hayes at the beginning of the original movie.
    • The scene in which Duncan throws various objects at the killer is a parody of the original movie in which the main character, Alice, throws many objects at Mrs. Voorhees, who is not affected by them at all. In addition, Duncan confronts the killer near the lake, similar to the final confrontation between Alice and Mrs. Voorhees. Finally, like Alice, Duncan defeats the killer with the killer's own weapon.
    • The idea of Chef impersonating a masked killer is similar to Roy Burns impersonating Jason in Friday the 13th Part V.
    • The fact that the alleged killer is Chef Hatchet, who is the camp cook, is similar to the fact that the killer in the original Friday the 13th (Pamela Voorhees) was the cook at Camp Crystal Lake.
    • Also, the movie the campers were watching looks a lot like the original Friday the 13th movie (although Jason Voorhees doesn't appear until the second movie).
  • Other prominent spoofs of horror movies include:
    • Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The chainsaw is a reference to the series' signature weapon. In addition, the outfit worn by both killers, especially the dirty apron, is similar to the outfit often worn by the series' main killer, Leatherface.
    • Halloween: The concept of a mentally unstable killer escaping from prison could be a reference to Michael Myers, the main killer of this series. Similarly, the scene where Gwen is in the cabin where the real killer appears is similar to the scene where Loomis and Michael meet in the fourth film.
      • This is the first episode to reference a John Carpenter movie, Halloween. The next two are "The Sand Witch Project" (Total Drama Action) and "The EX-Files" (Total Drama World Tour).
    • Psycho: Heather being attacked in the bathroom while taking a shower is an obvious homage to the infamous shower scene from that movie with the infamous music playing.
    • I Know What You Did Last Summer: The killer's hook is an homage to the one worn by Ben Willis.
    • Sleepaway Camp: Similar to the original Friday the 13th, the movie takes place in a summer camp.
    • Scream: Gwen's speech on how to survive may also be a reference to Randy Meeks' speech on the various rules for surviving a horror movie, including the rule that couples making out alone are the first to die.
  • The part where Owen shouts "Great balls of fire!" could be a reference to a song by Jerry Lee Lewis called "Great Balls of Fire."
  • Duncan's confessional before facing the "killer" is a reference to "The Untouchables."
  • Gwen's position as the last survivor to face the killer fulfills the "Final Girl" trope, such as:
  • The fact that the contestants are unaware that a challenge is in progress, combined with the way Chris watches from the monitors, is similar to the TV prank show Punk'd. Heather and Owen both directly reference this by saying that Chris "punk'd" them.

Goofs[]

  • While Chris is doing the recap, he claims that Heather destroyed Lindsay's bike as well as their alliance. However, not only is Lindsay's bike not destroyed by Heather, it comes out of the challenge completely unscathed.
  • When she is holds her finger across her throat like a knife, Izzy has five fingers instead of four.
  • When Duncan confronts the "killer", he cuts off Chef's hook with a chainsaw, but when everyone runs to warn Gwen that the real killer is on the loose, Chef's hook is restored.
  • Despite the fact that the entire episode takes place at night, when the campers are in the confessional, it is daytime. This is another clue to the theory that the campers talk about their experiences after the challenge is over. However, this creates a plot hole because DJ is in the confessional and yet it is still night when he is eliminated, so it should have been night when he confesses.
  • When Chef comes up to Duncan in his killer costume, he's wearing his chef's hat, but it disappears in the next shot when Duncan starts throwing things at him.
  • When Izzy and Owen are running through the woods, Izzy's wristband is missing, and when Izzy is watching Owen fall down the cliff, her wristband is on the wrong arm.
  • When Gwen puts out the burning chart, there are still all the X's on the campers. However, when the camera zooms out, none of the images are crossed out.
  • Chef's chainsaw is taped to a hockey stick, and he uses the stick as a handle, but when his silhouette is shown, he is holding the chainsaw by its regular handle, and there is no sign of the hockey stick.
  • When everyone hugs DJ at the end of the episode, Duncan has five fingers instead of four.
  • When Leshawna sees the brownies, they are arranged as if they were in a baking pan. As she approaches the main door of the lodge, the brownies are stacked. In the next frame, they are back in the pan arrangement.
  • When Izzy falls down the cliff and sets off the dynamite, the flash goes off about a second and a half before the explosion is heard.
  • When Duncan goes to confront the killer, he drops the burning sticks to the ground. But when the screen zooms out after Gwen puts out the fire, the burning sticks are nowhere to be seen.
  • When Duncan confronts Chef on the dock, he throws objects lying on the dock at him. However, when Duncan approached the dock on the computer screen, they were not there.
  • As everyone runs to save Gwen from the real killer, Chris is shown screaming at Gwen, but his lips don't move.
  • When Owen takes Chris's hair gel out of the backpack left on the dock, Geoff is missing.
  • In the wide shot of everyone rushing to save Gwen, Chef is shown to be only as tall as Heather and Izzy, when he should be as tall as DJ, which is his normal height.
