The newly gender-divided teams are officially dissolved, and two previously eliminated campers are back in the game. One returning camper bears a bitter grudge against another, making it impossible for the latter to survive the game. The remaining campers will have to fend for themselves unless they have an alliance. The campers are then put through an excruciating torture challenge, with individual immunity on the line for the first time. Someone wins the challenge, immunity, and an awesome prize, while somebody else is voted off again for their bad temper.
Plot[]
The episode opens with the remaining female campers "relaxing" on the shore of the lake. Despite their calm demeanor, there is clearly an air of suspicion and animosity between them, mostly due to losing the previous challenge to the boys. A fly lands on Heather's nose, but Lindsay smacks her in the face with the magazine she was reading before she can swat it away, causing Heather to yell at her despite Lindsay's good intentions. Suddenly, a yacht horn sounds over Heather's insult, followed by Heather covering her mouth. The male campers are seen returning on the yacht, dancing happily as they return from their time at the five-star spa resort. As the boys slide onto the dock, they talk about the luxurious treatment they received, much to the jealousy of the girls.

Owen offers the girls a plate of chocolate-covered cherry blossoms, but in a fit of rage, Leshawna throws her right sandal at the plate, knocking it out of Owen's hands and into the pool, causing Owen to become upset. Geoff comforts him by pointing out that the ladies are "just a little jealous". Duncan then chimes in, saying that the boys get along so well while the girls are all suspicious and mutinous, and that "guys rule".
Moments later, Chris announces over the loudspeaker that from now on the teams will be disbanded and each camper will be on their own. Suddenly the guys have no problem being against each other. Chris isn't done with the surprises though, and former Killer Bass member Eva returns to the island moments later, with dramatic music playing and a huge wall of fire blazing behind her. Eva states that she will be paying close attention to the former Bass team, who voted her out of the competition earlier. Gwen wonders aloud why Eva returned after Chris repeatedly stated that once a camper is voted out, they are never allowed to return. Chris replies that he lied, and Leshawna warns Gwen not to discuss the matter any further. Since Bridgette is the last former female Killer Bass member left in the competition and the one who suggested she get anger management, she soon discovers that she is the object of Eva's attention and need for revenge. Chris then greets the second returning camper, Izzy, a former Screaming Gopher who swings in on a jungle vine. Izzy says that she never left the island and that she hid from the RCMP in the forest and took refuge in the beaver dam. Chris then instructs the campers to gather in the amphitheater for their next challenge. Owen is excited and asks Duncan for a high-five, but Duncan tells him that Chris said it's "every camper for themselves". Owen sighs and walks away as he watches the yacht leave.
Eva enters the girls' cabin and the girls are all startled by her presence. When Eva asks about the duct tape on the floor, Heather just rolls it up and brushes it off. Bridgette and Eva get into an argument about sleeping arrangements, but Leshawna soon intervenes, much to Bridgette's relief. Eva then continues to call Leshawna "thunder thighs," which angers Leshawna, who calls Eva a "macho mama with butt cheeks tighter than my weave". Gwen intervenes by calling them out, and Lindsay suggests they chat about it over low-calorie snacks. Eva finally gives in, albeit bitterly, and declares that she will win anyway. Bridgette then thanks Leshawna for filling in for her, and Leshawna smiles and says it's her pleasure.

“ | That girl is getting on my last nerve! | ” |
Later, the campers are seated in a multilevel panel area in the amphitheater, and Chris explains that the next competition will be a torture game called "Say Uncle". Any camper who refuses a challenge or fails to complete it in the allotted ten seconds will be disqualified, and the winner will receive invincibility and a luxury trailer. After introducing a mask-wearing Chef as his assistant, Chris spins the Wheel of Misfortune for Duncan's challenge.
For the "Turtle Puck Shots" challenge, Duncan is forced to stand in front of a hockey net while Chef fires grumpy snapping turtles at him. One turtle bites him in the groin when he is unprotected. Duncan groans, and Chris provokes him by asking if he's having fun, to which Duncan sarcastically replies, "It's a riot". Trent tries to talk to Gwen, telling her that Duncan's part of the challenge was tough, but she tells him not to, leading Trent to wonder if she's still upset about the "burying her alive" incident in a previous episode. Trent gets back on Gwen's good side by telling her that if he had the chance, she'd be the last person he'd bury alive, which Gwen thinks is sweet.
Lindsay's challenge is "Marshmallow Waxing," which requires her to endure ten seconds of excruciating pain as Chef applies melted marshmallow mixture to her face. She succeeds and is pleased with how flawless her skin has become. Trent tells Gwen that the marshmallow wax would have been painful, and he doubts that he would have gone through with it. Gwen explains that this is because men are weak in two areas: beauty and pain. Lindsay gets to pick who goes next because she didn't complain during the challenge. With Eva's "advice," Lindsay choose Bridgette as the next contestant, whose task is to stand in a barrel of leeches for ten seconds.
Leshawna |
“ | Even though we all wanted Eva off the island, for some reason that girl was gunning for Bridgette. I felt bad and all, but, hey, better her than me. | ” |
Geoff volunteers to do the challenge in place of Bridgette, but falls just short of the required ten seconds and ends up surviving in the barrel with a time of 9.9..., which Chris considers is not enough. He is then eliminated from the challenge and forced to enter the stocks, where all losers must be tied up. Owen is next and his challenge is to wear a pair of wooden shorts and endure a woodpecker. A montage then shows Gwen having her nose hair plucked, DJ being eaten and squeezed by a boa constrictor which disqualifies him, and Bridgette wearing a shirt made entirely of live bees. Chris spins the wheel and says the next challenge is to spend ten seconds in a large wooden crate with Sasquatchanakwa. Bridgette, encouraged by the other campers, willingly chooses Eva for the challenge.

Eva enters the box, and ten seconds later she is wearing a hat and boots that appear to be made of the beast, meaning she had no trouble with the challenge. Bridgette is eliminated as a result of Eva's performance, and Chris then shows a series of clips of other campers being eliminated: Trent can't jump over a line of skunks between rocks; Gwen can't stand ten seconds of New Age music; Lindsay can't get her hair cut by Chef with a chainsaw, which Chris calls the "Wawanakwa Hair Salon"; and Owen can't eat a lot of ice cream without getting a brain freeze. Afterwards, Izzy is shocked by a pair of electric eels, and she enjoys it so much that she demands it be done again. Chris tells her that she can choose the next contestant, and she chooses herself for a poison ivy spa treatment.
Leshawna |
“ | Is it just me, or is that girl some kind of crazy? | ” |
The judges will approve it, Chris says, but they want to know why. Izzy replies that she needs to know how it feels. Despite her face being covered in red spots from poison ivy, she lasts the required ten seconds. However, she is eliminated because she chose herself. Finally, Chris announces that Eva and Leshawna are the last two campers standing after twenty rounds of torture.
Leshawna |
“ | I did not make it this far to quit now. That trailer is bank, and it's got my name written all over it. Whatever he's got to throw at me, I'm gonna do. | ” |
Chris informs Leshawna that her challenge will be to roll a log with Molotov, a grizzly bear who Chris believes has been the European log-rolling champion for the past twelve years. Chris advises Leshawna that she must stay on the log for ten seconds to avoid death in the surrounding piranha-infested waters. Chris offers Leshawna the chance to leave, but she refuses. After Molotov initially has control of the log, Leshawna takes it back by running to a jumping stop, causing Molotov to fall into the water and roll moments later, almost completely stripped of his fur by the piranha attack. Leshawna earns individual invincibility as well as a brand-new, food-filled trailer. Eva is furious about the victory, even though Leshawna brags about it to Eva's face.
At the campfire ceremony later that night, Chris tells the campers that they are out of marshmallows, which clearly upsets Owen. Chris goes on to say that he's been watching the confessional tapes and that there's a lot of hatred among the campers, which he thinks is great. He decides to show the campers what their peers think and who they voted for. In the shots, Heather votes for Eva; Duncan votes for Heather; Gwen, Bridgette, DJ, Geoff, and Lindsay vote for Eva; and Eva votes for Heather. So Chris says that Eva is voted out with six votes.
Eva is then seen on the Boat of Losers in a straitjacket, shouting that she will get her revenge and accusing Izzy of lying about where she spent her time. Izzy immediately changes the focus of the conversation before Eva can finish, and the campers agree to go to Leshawna's new trailer that night to party.
Elsewhere, Sasquatchanakwa and Molotov are seen in a remote cave trying on some of the campers' clothes to cover their missing fur. Sasquatchanakwa puts on Geoff's missing "lucky hat", while Molotov tries on Sadie's clothes and, like Katie and Sadie, squeals with delight.
Exclusive clip[]
After her return to the game, Izzy appears on Chris's talk show. She tells Chris that, after she escaped the custody of the RCMP during the campfire ceremony in "Up the Creek," she came across an abandoned barge off the shores of Lake Huron. She discovered a cargo of maple syrup and inexpensive Chinese-made plastic souvenir beaver thermose. She uses the cargo to build "Izzy's Happy Sap," becoming incredibly rich, calling herself a "zillionaire." She then claims that she began dating Justin around that time, but that she ended their relationship after discovering that he is a liar. Chris admits that he hates phonies and liars, despite the fact that both he and Izzy have lied often on Total Drama Island. The two then toast to being famous and drink "Izzy's Happy Sap."

Trivia[]
General[]
- Gwen, Izzy, Lindsay, and Owen are the only campers seen doing more than one challenge.
- Though Duncan passes his first challenge, he is not seen attempting a second; however, he is later seen in stocks, suggesting that he has failed another challenge off-screen.
- Likewise, Heather was not seen performing any challenges, so it's unclear how many times she performed.
- Chef wears the same hockey mask in the challenge that he later wears in "Hook, Line, and Screamer."
- With Eva's second elimination, all the remaining campers qualified for Total Drama Action.
- No marshmallows are given out during the Campfire Ceremony.
- Chris mentions that they ran out of them, likely a callback to "X-Treme Torture," in which a bear had stolen all the marshmallows.
- It could also be because they used the rest of their marshmallows to wax Lindsay.
Continuity[]
- Gwen continues to resent Trent for leaving her in "Phobia Factor," but she begins to forgive him.
- Izzy says that she hid in the woods when the RCMP came looking for her, and that she befriended a family of beavers while there, but Eva claims that Izzy lied and that she actually lived somewhere else. It was most likely Playa Des Losers, which would explain how Eva knew.
- It's unknown why Eva was mad at Bridgette, even though she wasn't the only Killer Bass in the game to vote for her, as DJ, Duncan, and Geoff were still in the game.
- Also, Eva shows no signs of being angry at Heather, as she only finds out a few episodes later that it was Heather who stole her MP3 player.
- The first individual challenge was won by Leshawna. This is the first time a camper has won solo invincibility.
- This is the first time in the series that more than three members of the same team have been eliminated in a row. With Eva's departure, four former members of the Killer Bass have been eliminated in a row, with Sadie, Courtney, and Harold being the previous three.
- This is the first episode in the history of Total Drama in which the contestants return.
- This is also the only episode in the series where someone returns and is eliminated in the same episode.
- This episode marks the first time in Total Drama history that Chris simply reveals who the campers have voted to eliminate instead of handing out safety items.
- He shows most of them except Owen's, Leshawna's, Trent's, and Izzy's.
- This would later happen regularly during the Total Drama World Tour and Total Drama All-Stars.
- This is also the first time Chris has shown clips from campers' confessionals to stir up emotions among others.
- It later appears in "The Am-AH-Zon Race" (Total Drama World Tour) and "Lies, Cries and One Big Prize" (Total Drama: Pahkitew Island).
- This is currently the last episode with Eva as a contestant.
- Duncan refers to the events of "Basic Straining" when he votes against Heather in the confessional, believing that Heather is responsible for rigging the votes to eliminate Courtney.
- Despite the fact that Duncan was initially unaware that Harold had tampered with the votes, he admits that he discovered it by the time Total Drama Action began, specifically during "3:10 to Crazytown".
- This episode holds the most attended elimination ceremony of Total Drama Island with twelve contestants present.
- Later, during Total Drama Action, the episode "Alien Ressur-eggtion" broke this record with fourteen contestants present.
References[]
- The title of this episode parodies the phrase "no pain, no gain."
- Eva and Izzy's sudden return to the game after Chris' constant reminder that one cannot return to the game once they're voted out, leaving the contestants confused and unhappy, is a parody of the "Outcast tribe" twist from Survivor: Pearl Islands.
- The Wheel of Misfortune is a reference to the game show Wheel of Fortune.
Goofs[]
- Gwen is still mad at Trent for not digging her up in "Phobia Factor," even though - in previous episodes, including "Up the Creek," "Paintball Deer Hunter," "If You Can't Take the Heat...," "Basic Straining," and "X-Treme Torture" — she seemed to work perfectly well with him (or show concern whenever he got hurt) and was not mad at him at all.
- That said, as Trent and the rest of the guys spent days away from Camp Wawanakwa in a luxury spa trip the girls would have wished to get, it's possible that Gwen got embittered with him and that bad moment they had resurfaced in her mind.
- Eva tells Bridgette that she remembers her telling Eva that she needed anger management classes when it was actually Courtney who said that.
- When Lindsay is subjected to the "Marshmallow Waxing" challenge, Chris says that her entire body will be covered in marshmallow wax, but Chef only covers her face.
- Gwen communicates with Chris through the speaker, even though the peakers can only transmit sound, not absorb it.
- However, with Chris watching and listening to the contestants through cameras, it could be possible.
- Despite the fact that the wheel had only eight spaces, the campers were subjected to fifteen different forms of torture.
- What happened after a contestant won a challenge varied throughout: Lindsay and Izzy got to choose the method of torture for their designated victims, but after Bridgette survived the "vest of bees" challenge, her victim's method of torture ("fight Sasquatchanakwa") was pre-selected.
- In the final round, Chris says that Eva is up for the next challenge, but Leshawna ends up doing the challenge.
- After Leshawna won, Eva was automatically disqualified from the competition. Leshawna, on the other hand, could not have been eliminated because Eva did not choose the challenge for her.
- Eva appears in her swimsuit in the scene where Leshawna gloats to her, even though she does not wear it in the episode.
- Izzy is never shown in the stocks with the other campers, even though she was eliminated from the challenge.
- At the campfire ceremony, Trent is not present with the others.
- When everyone leaves the dock after Eva is eliminated, they appear to be walking towards the water rather than the ground.
- This may be because they may have been standing forward on the left side of the dock, so when they walk to the right, they're of the dock the island instead of the water.
- The log roll with Molotov is supposed to last ten seconds, but the challenge lasts about thirty seconds.
- After Eva is eliminated and Izzy invites everyone to a party at Leshawna's new crib, Trent and Heather are missing from the group.
- When Bridgette is eliminated from the challenge, Heather is absent.
- The Netflix description for this episode states that contestants must answer Camp Wawanakwa trivia questions or spin the wheel, which is incorrect — only the latter actually happens.
