Total Drama: Pahkitew Island is the second half of the fifth season of Total Drama, with the first half being Total Drama All-Stars.

Overview

Total Drama: Pahkitew Island features an all-new cast of fourteen at an all-new location. They are split into two teams: the Pimâpotew Kinosewak (Floating Salmon) and the Wâneyihtam Maskwak (Confused Bears). Pahkitew Island is completely empty, and the new contestants must rough it in the wild. Every episode, the winners may receive invincibility and a meal from a sponsoring restaurant, and losers may be sent home via the Cannon of Shame. Once again, teen freaks, geeks, egos, and cowards smash, crash, and bash their way through horrifying challenges with one goal in mind: winning that one-million dollar prize!

Format

  • All-New Cast: This season features fourteen new contestants.
  • Out in the Woods: For the first time, the contestants don't live in predetermined cabins or trailers, forcing them to build or look for shelter, while also not being provided food.
  • Teams Determined by Luck: Before they got to the island, the contestants were given random parachutes to jump off a plane and land on the island. The ones with parachutes formed the Pimâpotew Kinosewak, while the ones with fake parachutes formed the Wâneyihtam Maskwak.
  • Merge Composition: The merge consisted of seven members.
  • Elimination Challenge: Both during the final four and final three, the contestant that lost in a challenge would automatically be eliminated.
  • Finalist Helpers/Hinderers: In the final challenge, the two finalists were each given an eliminated contestant to act as their helper, Midway through the challenge, the two helpers became hinderers, working against the finalists with the opportunity to split the money between themselves if neither finalist completed the challenge.

Episodes

Availability

Netflix

On Netflix, Total Drama: Pahkitew Island was listed as the sixth season of Total Drama and contained unedited dialogue and full screen, in 16:9 aspect ratio. In November 2020, Netflix's global rights to the show were set to expire, resulting in it no longer being available on the platform. Netflix later confirmed that the show would be staying on for a little longer. However, in February 2021, all seasons of Total Drama were removed from Netflix in some regions, though it remained available in the United States as well as Canada.

BBC IPlayer

On BBC IPlayer, Total Drama: Pahkitew Island was released on the 21st of October, along with Total Drama Revenge of the Island and Total Drama All Stars. It contained unedited dialogue and full screen, 16:9 aspect ratio. However, the audio is slightly higher-pitched than normal. This is available for UK residents only

Trivia

  • This season features another new set of contestants, making them the third generation cast of the show.
  • In several countries outside of Canada, this is referred to as the sixth season rather than the second half of the fifth season.
  • This season marks the end of the original Total Drama series, as every installment in the franchise afterwards would either be considered a spin-off, or a part of the reboot series.
  • According to Chris in the first episode, as well as Fresh TV's now-defunct Tumblr, Pahkitew is Cree for 'exploding.'[1]
  • This, along with the first reboot season (not counting Priya's dad disguised as Owen), are the only iterations of the series where none of the original twenty-two contestants are seen, heard, or mentioned.
  • This is the first season where no contestants were severely injured to the point of needing bandages or casts.
  • This is the first season where none of the contestants introduced end up becoming mutated at some point.
  • This season follows many elements of Survivor:
    • The teams are randomly selected as opposed to a pre-selection of some sort.
    • No shelter is provided to the contestants.
    • Two episode titles come from quotes from the contestants.
    • The team names are Cree, similar to how Survivor tribe names are based on words or names of tribes from the area in which the season takes place.
  • The first two male contestants eliminated are both voiced by Clé Bennett, while the first two female contestants eliminated are voiced by Bryn McAuley.
  • This is the second season in which three of the four finalists are the same gender, while one is of another gender; in this case, Shawn is the only male contestant in the final four.
  • This is the second season not to be edited in any way by Cartoon Network, with the first being Total Drama All-Stars.
  • This is the second season in which no contestants return to the competition after being eliminated. The first is Total Drama All-Stars.
  • This is the first season in the series to not have a swimming-themed challenge.
    • This is also the only season where none of the contestants are shown in their swimsuits.
  • This is the first season where the males competing never outnumber the female contestants.
  • This is the first season to feature a female winner in Canada.
  • Beardo, Leonard, Rodney, Samey, Topher, and Dave are the only contestants to be properly voted out, making this season have the least number of contestants eliminated normally, with six.
    • In Samey's case, she is the only female to do so.
  • This is the only season where Chef doesn't use the confessional.
  • Counting Sky's ending and not this season's team switch, this is the first and only season where both of this season's teams' highest-ranking members are female.
  • This is the season that has more disqualifications than any other seasons, with three:
  • This is the only season where the Canadian province of Ontario has no involvement, since the season itself takes place entirely somewhere in Western Canada.
  • This is the only season in the show where no female competitors expose any form of nudity, making all the female members of the third-generation cast the only ones to not appear naked in any form.
  • Not counting Leonard competing in the spin-off, this season’s cast is the only generation cast where none of the contestants compete again.
  • According to a bonus clip that aired after the All-Stars finale, the cast from this season was chosen randomly by Chris due to him throwing piles of auditions and grabbing at the fourteen of them that didn't fall from his desk.
