Total Drama Island (formerly titled Camp TV) is the first season of Total Drama.

Overview

Created as a parody of shows like Survivor and Fear Factor, Total Drama Island focuses on twenty-two teenagers' arrival at Camp Wawanakwa to compete in a reality television show. The contestants are divided into two teams and must compete in challenges every three days. While the winning team earns invincibility, the losing team has to vote off one of their own players. Whoever is voted off must walk the Dock of Shame to the Boat of Losers and leave the island. The teams eventually dissolve, and the elimination process continues until the last contestant standing wins a grand prize of $100,000.

Format

• Team Composition: The twenty-two campers were divided into two teams of eleven—the Killer Bass and the Screaming Gophers.
• Team Swap: Two contestants swapped teams.
• Battle of the Sexes: The original teams were disbanded into a "boys vs. girls" team challenge.
• Merge Composition: There were twelve campers who were part of the merge—ten, which are still competing, plus two returnees.
• Return: Two previously eliminated contestants return at the merge.
• Elimination Challenge: During the final nine, the contestants faced a sudden-death motocross challenge, where the last contestant to cross the line was automatically eliminated. During the final eight, the contestant who fails to complete the horror challenge is also eliminated. During the final three, the contestant who refuses to complete one of the eliminated contestants' dare would automatically be sent to the Boat of Losers.
• Eliminated Contestants' Vote: During the final five, the eliminated contestants residing in Playa Des Losers were given the opportunity to vote out one of the remaining contestants.
• Final Challenge: Instead of a final elimination ceremony, where the eliminated contestants would vote for a winner, the final two contestants competed in a final challenge; the winner of the prize money was the first to cross the finish line.

Camp TV is the original prototype for Total Drama Island and only featured eighteen of this season's twenty-two contestants.

Total Drama Island episodes are usually rated TV-PG in the United States, for suggestive dialogue and aggressive language. On occasion, an episode will be rated TV-PG D for mild flirtatious dialogue, such as X-Treme Torture.

Availability

DVD

Total Drama Island has been released on DVD by Cartoon Network (Total Drama Island: The Complete First Season) and Madman Entertainment in Australia. Cartoon Network's DVD contains the entire first season with some dialog censored, while the Australian DVDs are unedited and split into two collections.

Netflix

On Netflix, Total Drama Island could be found in HD, full screen, 16:9 aspect ratio with the censored version. In November 2020, Netflix's global rights to the show were set to expire, resulting in the show no longer being available on the platform. Netflix later confirmed that the show would remain for a bit longer. However, in February 2021, all seasons of Total Drama were removed from Netflix in some regions, although it remained available in the United States and Canada. On February 1st, 2024, seasons after Total Drama Action have been removed in countries outside of Canada.

Cartoon Network-adjacent Streaming Channels

All episodes of Total Drama Island are available to be streamed on StackTV and Teletoon+. However it's noted that some episodes, such as Not Quite Famous, The Sucky Outdoors, and Paintball Deer Hunter, are listed under different titles.

Trivia

• This is the first of five seasons to take place entirely at Camp Wawanakwa.
  • The others are Total Drama: Revenge of the Island, Total Drama All-Stars, Total Drama Island (2023), and Total Drama Island (2024).
• This is the first of three seasons where the remaining two finalists (Gwen and Owen) are from the same team.
  • This happens again in All-Stars, Pahkitew Island, and Island (2024). However, there was a team swap in the third occurance leading to them being on different teams at one point.
  • This is also the first of two seasons where all of the final three (Gwen, Heather, and Owen) are from the same team. This would also happen again in Island (2024).
• This is the only season where there is no double elimination.
• This is the only season where both teams' lowest-ranking members are male: Ezekiel (Killer Bass) and Noah (Screaming Gophers).
• This is the only season with a winning prize of $100,000.
  • It wasn't until the special episode for that season, "Total Drama, Drama, Drama, Drama Island," that the prize changed to $1,000,000, setting the trend for the rest of the seasons.
• This is the only season in which Izzy competes and is not the first member of her team to be eliminated.
• This is the only season where Bridgette competes and is not the first female contestant to be eliminated.
• This is the only season where Courtney is not the last female Killer Bass member in a season, as Bridgette was the highest-ranking female on her team.
• With twenty-two contestants, this season has the most contestants.
  • As a result, this season has the highest number of eliminations of any season so far, with a total of twenty-three; including Eva and Izzy as the two returning contestants, and the loss of Gwen or Owen in the finale.
  • This is also the only season in which Eva, Katie, and Sadie compete.
• Not counting the first spin-off, Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race, this season features the most challenges and contestants of any season.
• This season features seven irregular eliminations, that is, without being regularly voted out. This is the opposite of Total Drama World Tour, which had only seven regular eliminations.
  • Izzy left the competition after being chased by the RCMP.
  • Courtney was eliminated because Harold tampered with the votes.
  • Lindsay, DJ, and Heather were all automatically eliminated because of a challenge.
  • Leshawna was accidentally voted out by the eliminated contestants living at Playa Des Losers, as well as a parrot.
  • Duncan was intentionally eliminated by Chef Hatchet.
• This is one of only two seasons whose main promotional image is a moment from an actual episode, the other being Total Drama World Tour.
• Total Drama Island has been featured as a question on the game show Jeopardy!, with both "Dodgebrawl" and "Brunch of Disgustingness" mentioned as part of the clue.
• Not counting her elimination, Leshawna is the highest-placing contestant on this season to never be in the bottom two.
• The marketing of the series as "the first animated reality show" was close to that of the adult animated series Drawn Together.
  • Drawn Together is a parody of Big Brother, one of CBS's most famous reality shows, along with Survivor and The Amazing Race, both of which are parodied in Total Drama.
